
In the era of digital transformation, ESG is no longer merely a theoretical concept or a practice limited to traditional manufacturing. For Cloud Computing and Data Center sectors, ESG has become an essential standard directly influencing operational performance, costs, and core competitive capabilities.
1. What is ESG?
ESG is a framework used to measure a company's long-term sustainability and risk management capability based on three core pillars:
Environmental (E): The level of control over ecological impacts, including carbon emissions, energy consumption efficiency, adoption of renewable energy, and waste management.
Social (S): The company's relationships and responsibilities toward its workforce, clients, and community. In the technology sector, this pillar heavily emphasizes data privacy, information security, and equitable working conditions.
Governance (G): The quality of corporate management demonstrated through reporting transparency, Board of Directors oversight, risk management, and legal compliance.
2. Why has ESG become the “Gold Standard”?
Unlike voluntary CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities, ESG is a quantitative, comparable framework integrated into investment, valuation, and partnership decisions. It is a key metric utilized by international investors, multinational corporations, and major financial institutions. A high ESG rating indicates a sustainable investment with lower long-term risk.
Amid the strong influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) and global supply chain integration, ESG is no longer an academic concept, but a prerequisite for Vietnamese businesses to participate in global supply chains.
3. The Strategic Intersection of ESG and Cloud Computing Infrastructure
The rapid growth of AI, high-performance computing, and Big Data makes data centers use a huge amount of electricity. Today, digital technology uses about 1–1.5% of the world's power because millions of servers and cooling systems run non-stop.
In this context, embedding ESG frameworks is no longer a compliance obligation but a smart strategy. It empowers both Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and enterprises to grow sustainably across three core pillars:
E - Environmental: Energy Efficiency & Carbon Emissions Reduction
From a technical perspective, a Data Center is a highly energy-intensive infrastructure system built around four main layers: compute (CPU, GPU, and AI accelerators), storage (HDD, SSD, and object storage), network (switches, routers, and backbone systems), and cooling. Among these, cooling can account for around 30–40% of total electricity consumption. As AI, Big Data, IoT, and large-scale digital platforms continue to grow, computing density in Data Centers is increasing rapidly. This directly leads to higher electricity consumption, greater heat generation, and higher indirect carbon emissions.
From an ESG perspective, especially under the Environmental pillar, Scope 2 emissions from electricity consumption and Scope 3 emissions across the IT supply chain are becoming increasingly important to measure and disclose. Therefore, Cloud providers are no longer viewed simply as technical infrastructure providers. They have become a strategic source of emissions within their customers’ value chains. At the same time, businesses using Cloud services are indirectly responsible for the carbon footprint of the digital infrastructure they rely on.[1]
This creates several new requirements. Data Centers need to improve energy efficiency through: lower PUE, greater use of renewable energy, and the development of Green Data Centers. Cloud platforms also need to demonstrate efficient resource utilization by measuring and optimizing carbon emissions per workload, per VM, per container, or per digital transaction.
S - Social: Data Security
Banks, hospitals, government agencies, e-commerce platforms, and AI services all depend on Cloud systems to deliver their services. This means that a Cloud outage can have consequences far beyond a technical problem. If a critical Cloud system goes down, it may interrupt financial transactions, affect access to healthcare, disrupt public services, or compromise sensitive personal information.
This is where the Social aspect of ESG becomes important. Cloud providers have a responsibility to ensure that the infrastructure they operate is reliable, secure, and able to withstand major disruptions.
From an ESG perspective, the Social pillar looks at how well a company protects its stakeholders and keeps essential services stable. For Cloud platforms, this is reflected in three key capabilities:
High Availability: ensuring critical systems remain available and operate continuously.
Data Protection & Privacy: protecting sensitive information, including financial, healthcare, and citizen data.
Resilience, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity Planning: maintaining operations and recovering quickly in the event of major disruptions or disasters.
G – Governance: Systemic Risk Management
From a governance perspective, Cloud infrastructure has become much more than an IT asset. It supports critical business data, essential applications, and key operational processes. As a result, a Cloud failure can affect not only technology systems, but also business operations, regulatory compliance, and overall organizational stability. This makes Cloud risk a management and governance issue. The main risks include service disruption, data loss or leakage, non-compliance with data protection and data sovereignty requirements, and risks arising from third-party and digital supply chains.
Under the Governance pillar of ESG, companies are expected to have strong risk management, effective internal controls, and clear accountability. For Cloud and Data Center projects, this means having robust governance frameworks covering:
Security and compliance standards, such as ISO 27001, ISO 22301, SOC 2, PCI DSS, and CSA STAR.
Business continuity and incident management, including Disaster Recovery (DR), Business Continuity Planning (BCP), and Incident Response.
Clear and measurable service commitments, including SLA, Recovery Time Objective (RTO), and Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
Continuous monitoring and reporting, with proper controls, audit trails, and risk management throughout the entire service lifecycle.
ESG is no longer an option but a strategic standard for Cloud and Data Center infrastructure. Integrating environmental efficiency, data security, resilience, and strong governance is essential to reduce risks, create long-term value, and build trusted digital infrastructure.
